DAL/HOLD
26 May 2012 - 22 June 2012

(Of art, of gesture, of love, and the like)
Artists: Jonny Briggs, Mark Davey, Carwyn Evans, Angharad Pearce Jones
‘Dal / Hold’ features work from London-based photographer Jonny Briggs and sculptor Mark Davey alongside that by Wales-based artists Carwyn Evans and Angharad Pearce Jones.
'There are different ways of conceiving ‘identity',' says Cardiff-based artist Carwyn Evans who compiled the show. 'It occupies an enquiring position in everyday conversation and is a preoccupation within my thinking and the work I produce. Since I rarely pause to consider alternative definitions and presentations of ‘identity’ to that of my own, I hope to bring a selection of artworks together which will explore, scrutinise and further understand its varying agencies, as means of comprehending some of the intersections and ideologies which forms ‘identity’ today.'
Jonny Briggs, Winner of Saatchi's New Sensations 2011 and current finalist for the Catlin Art Prize 2012, is fast becoming a highly sought-after artist following his recent successful solo exhibitions in Paris and Verona. Mark Davey, former Winner of Saatchi's New Sensations in 2009, creates kinetic works that have the distinct features of being delicate and sensual, even sexual; attributes not often attributed to machines. Carwyn Evans, Fine Art Award winner at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2009 and judge of the forthcoming St. David's Hall Welsh Artist of the Year 2012 has recently set-up studio at the adjoining Butetown Artists Studio. Carwyn’s work attempts to illuminate questions about locational-identity through a series of works inspired by place, process and residue. Angharad Pearce Jones is as an artist, blacksmith and designer who is producing a large and new installation specifically for the gallery space and the exhibition. Picking up from explorations that focus on the search for the ‘ultimate level of privacy’ through the presentation of a conundrum of fences and gates, Angharad’s new installation comments on her recent unsuccessful attempts at obtaining tickets for the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
