Statement

“Subconsciously I fear being forgotten and this is why, through my art, I try to leave a trace and, however lightly, touch people’s lives through my interventions. I present the familiar back to the viewer but it is familiarity that has been filtered through my perception; I share my experience of the world.

Coming from a background of contemporary sculpture, my practice focuses on the small details and idiosyncrasies of everyday life and explores the narratives that surround them. Objects and possessions particularly fascinate me; the stories they can hold, the memories they can contain and the emotions they can evoke. They can be treasured by some and discarded by others, and be valuable and worthless, meaningful and meaningless simultaneously.

Fate, chance, coincidence and superstition are common threads that run through all the work I make, as well as through everything else in my life. Perhaps in an effort to construct meaning from our inexplicable existence or to feel a sense of control over my life I use these factors to structure and analyse my personal view of the world.

The way in which I go about my art rarely changes, and again mirrors my life outside my practice. Recording, collecting, archiving and ‘preserving for posterity’ are very important to me, so as to leave the all-important trace. I am almost constantly striving to create a situation where I could be removed from my life and my work but I could be perfectly summed up by what I left behind; my possessions, my home, my art. I am scared of forgetting, of being forgotten, of running out of time.”
