Statement
Lucy Baker is a Cardiff based visual artist located in TactileBosch studios specialising in painting, drawing and photography.
Her work emanates from a passion of outdoor environments and self immersion within nature. It instigates the viewer to question the elements of an environment, contextually transporting them from a scene of subliminal nature and contemplation to a harsher, organic physicality which is as much wild as it is sheltering.
Living in Wales, she often takes herself to the respite of the coast or its mountainous scenery where she is able to contemplate being and existing within the expanse of her chosen environment. This adjournment from the disquiet whirlpool that is modern, urban living offers contrast and opportunity to overcome the oppression of walls we have built around us that harbour a population undergoing menial drudgery for today’s capitalist plutocracy.
Lucy paints outdoors in pen and watercolour and works in oil on canvas in the studio. Working with paint as a medium, is an organic process whereby the artist can relive experiences channelling energy to the canvas and finally reaching the viewer. The outcome is a comparison between a cramped metropolis and a natural environment where by the painting’s forms often mimic structures, boundaries and restrictions to be found in cities.
