I believe the visual artist can claim the same freedom as the poet or composer to choose any topic and to work in any medium, genre or style.

I am one of many visual artists who in recent decades have looked to philosophy to help explain the state of contemporary art and to develop a framework for debate and criticism. Supervised by Dr Andrew Edgar at Cardiff University, I completed my PhD thesis in 2009. This defends the importance of the aesthetic dimension in art, with arguments based on philosophy, evolutionary theory and cognitive neuroscience.
