Brendan Stuart Burns: Influere
14 November 2009 - 14 March 2010
opening night - 20 November 2009 - 6 - 8 pm
Brendan Stuart Burns: Influere

New works and the artist's selection from the collections of Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales

Oriel y Parc Landscape Gallery, St Davids
(www.orielyparc.co.uk)

Brendan Stuart Burns is Oriel y Parc’s first artist in residence. Born in 1963, he currently lives and works in Cardiff. He is best known for his paintings inspired by west Wales. He has twice won the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and has twice been named Welsh Artist of the Year. This exhibition is the result of his residency and marks a continuation of the artist's engagement with the coast of Pembrokeshire that has been his principal subject for the past fifteen years. The residency has offered Burns a unique experience – working directly in the landscape for a period of almost a year, mapping the coast as it changes with the seasons. Moving away from his previous inspiration of Druidston beach, Burns has explored the area surrounding St Davids, particularly Caerfai beach and the Pembrokeshire coastal path.

While Burns’ immediate influence is the landscape, the work of other artists has been vital to his artistic development. Burns knows the collections at Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales well, having studied and lived in Cardiff for many years. For this exhibition, he has selected a personal group of works from the collection, by artists that have directly inspired his practice both past and present including Frank Auerbach, Sean Scully, Howard Hodgkin, Ceri Richards, Ben Nicholson, Eugene Boudin and Thomas Jones.

Brendan Stuart Burns: Influere has been organised as part of ArtShare Wales, Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales' visual arts partnership. ArtShare Wales aims to increase access to the national art collection via innovative collaborative projects with organisations around Wales, and is generously funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

Brendan will be talking about the exhibition and his work on Thursday 10th December, 2pm, Oriel y Parc.

He will also be in conversation with David Alston on Saturday 6th February, 2pm, Oriel y Parc.

Both events are free but places are limited. For more details, please contact 01437 725082.
